The only place in our 10 day trip we found South Indian breakfast was here. Guy is from Gulbarga, Karnataka and the only person we spoke to in Kannada 😍 breakfast was nice.
The Curry Leaf, a South Indian Restaurant on Fort Road, is another one of those literal hidden gems of Leh. I stumbled across this restaurant on one of my walks around Leh. Its signage is barely noticeable, and the restaurant in not visible from the street. Once you descend the stairs to the restaurant, your trials aren't over. Often, no one's visible in its spacious premises. The Curry Leaf, is more of a garden restaurant. Sure, there's a formal table-chair dining area under a covered plexiglass roof, but the real McCoy are the tables set under shady apple trees. Since it was breakfast time, I ordered a masala dosa and idli. For a place this distance and remote, getting the batter right every day must be a sore trial. Yet the Curry Leaf's masala dosa was just the right sort of soft and crisp, and its potato-onion filling was fresh and absolutely mouth-watering. The accompanying white coconut chutney was nice, the sambhar less so. The idli, again, was fresh and soft, the food totally enhanced in flavor and texture by the delightful garden ambience. I can't wait to go there when the apples are ripening.
Very good South Indian food. Must try for South Indian Bikers. Half way through any expedition. Good place to get a hold of home food that a South Indian can miss! Cheers guys
